    Daniel Williams

    Select Specialty Hospital-Tallahassee, Florida

Daniel Williams, 22 years old, had just started a new job with an air conditioning company when he became sick with fever, a headache and a stiff neck. Within 24 hours of feeling bad, he went from interacting normally to a coma-like state requiring a ventilator to breathe. He was admitted to the neuro ICU of a large medical center and for 10 days the cause of his illness remained a mystery. His diagnosis was finally made as West Nile virus. After almost a month in ICU, Daniel was referred to Select Specialty Hospital-Tallahassee where he could wean from the ventilator, continue the acute medical treatments he needed, get off the feeding tube and begin physical therapy. At Select, Daniel weaned from the vent and became stronger and more interactive. He even brought in his Xbox and played games as therapy. Daniel’s father says, "The staff at Select was fantastic. We have been overwhelmed by the love and support he has received from his caregivers, his employer and others in the community." Daniel was discharged to an inpatient rehab. He has since returned home and regained upper body capabilities. He works out daily with therapists and a personal trainer to regain lower body strength and the ability to walk again.
